His parents divorced when he was six, and his mother moved to Lafayette. He was given a pygmy goat, Box, that he could keep with him always. His parents agreed that during the week he would live with his mother, and weekends and breaks would be spent on his father's ranch. He started exhibiting his powers over the summer before fifth grade. Seeing how he could not control them, and fearing for his safety, his parents put him in homeschooling. When he told his parents he had been contacted by the headmaster, they were hesitant to believe him but were pleased to let him go when they were contacted themselves so that he could have a normal school life again.
